Types
The suitable planting system in the orchard depends on topography, crop, variety, planting density, production technology.
The main objective of the planting is to accommodate the maximum number of fruit tree per unit area without affecting the efficiency of production.
1. Square System
It is the simplest and most convenient system.
Most popular and commonly adopted system.
Row to row and plant to plant distance are kept similar.
2. Rectangular System
Row to row space kept more compare to plant to plant.
Commonly used for HDP planting.
3. Hexagonal / Equilateral Triangle / Septule System
It accommodates 15% more trees than square system.
Very difficult to layout.
Preferred in areas where land is costly.
4. Quincunx System / Diagonal System
Accommodate – 1.5 to 2.0 times (89%) more plants than square system adopted only when tree spacing exceeds 8–10 m or fruit crops which are very slow growing habits.
Similar to square system with addition of a tree in the centre of each square as filler of intercrops.
5. Triangular System / Alternate System
Difficult to layout.
Accommodates 11% lesser number of plants than square.
Mostly used in HDP.
6. Terrace / Contour System
Adopted in hilly areas where slope exceeds 10%.
7. Hedge Row Planting
Followed in HDP of apple & pineapple.
In double hedge row planting system 22% higher plants than single row planting system.
It is followed for mechanized fruit cultivation.
8. Adjacent Planting
Generally practiced in arid regions and less fertile soils.
